Elina essay Grice, Snowdon, Dretske, Strawson, Gettier, causation and belief
how does perception give us beliefs/knowledge about the world?
belief theories of perception
17th/18th century: ideas or sense-data indirect
but direct perception of your representation
if the model employs a direct theory of perception itself, then its not complete
theyre more like theories of appearance
if something appears to be red, then you are simply directly apprehending a red sense-data
not really a theory of perception account of appearances doesn't tell you very much
nowadays, prefer not to use sens-datum difficult to fit in with materialism
need alternative account of appearance
Pitcher + Armstrong
appearance = about acquiring a belief = the process of perception
different theories of perception /span> different beliefs
feel strongly that perception can't be reduced to a belief (seems to involve experience)
appearances are states with content how does it appear, it appears as though its e.g. on a table
in this way, its like belief, its intentional
communal zombies feelings would drop out of the language
connectionism + Wittgenstein
humour + Snowdon
Placebo effect + the chemical landscape what is pain Wall
mind as wrong level of explanation
perception vs epistemology
